Unitah County Crash Takes Life of Indian Affairs Officer

posted June 8, 2010 | by

Joshua Yazzie, 33 years old, is dead following a crash near the Bottle Hollow Reservoir on the Ute Indian Reservation in Uintah County, reports the Salt Lake Tribune. Mr. Yazzie, a federal law enforcement officer, was driving near a steep drop off, about a mile south of U.S. Highway 40 and 4 miles east of Roosevelt, Utah, when he lost control and his vehicle dropped over 200 feet down the embankment around 6:15 p.m. on June 7, 2010. Mr. Yazzie was in this particular area on a call to help emergency personnel who were dealing with a violent intoxicated person, according to the report. He was pronounced dead at the scene after having been ejected from his truck. He left behind his wife and two children. Joshua Yazzie was said not to have been wearing a seat belt at the time, although it is likely that even if he had, he would not have survived the 200 foot drop.

I send my sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Yazzie as they deal with this terrible loss. His children are young and no doubt will have a very difficult time dealing with their father’s untimely death. They will be in my prayers.

As a Utah personal injury attorney, I had questions after reading this story, such as: Was there a mechanical suspension failure that led to this crash? Was their some sort of distraction? Was there a problem with the road that contributed to the crash? Was he well rested or had he been working a long shift? Was there another vehicle involved that caused Yazzie to drive as he did? Why wasn’t he wearing his seat belt? Answers to these questions won’t, of course, bring back Joshua Yazzie, but they can help eliminate other possible causes of this tragic crash.
