Utah Snow Storm Causes One Death and Injures Four Others

posted April 29, 2010 | by

A recent spring snowstorm that caused many traffic accidents proved that winter has not quite left us and motorists must still be cautious during inclement weather. The first Utah auto accident happened on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at around 6:30 a.m. on Interstate 80 in Parley’s Canyon just before the Lamb’s Canyon exit. Utah Highway Patrol Troopers say a white Honda Accord was traveling east when the driver suddenly crossed the barrier into westbound traffic. A black Nissan Sentra was traveling in the westbound lane at the same time the Honda crossed the center barrier. The white Honda vaulted over barrier and landed on top of the black Sentra on the driver’s side. The Honda then rolled off the Nissan ejecting one of the two people inside the vehicle. According to KSL news, the driver and the passenger in the Accord were taken to University Medical Center in serious condition. The driver of the Nissan was taken to Intermountain Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The second crash happened just an hour later on state Road 32 in Peoa, Utah. Troopers report that the 28-year-old driver of a 1985 brown Oldsmobile was traveling too fast on the snowy roads and lost control of his vehicle causing him to swerve into oncoming traffic. The vehicle hit a 2000 Toyota Tundra that was traveling south. The driver of the Oldsmobile was not wearing a seatbelt and his car, being an older model, did not have any airbags. The driver died at the scene. The driver of the Tundra was taken to IMC with minor injuries.

I offer my sincerest condolences to the family of the driver of the Oldsmobile that passed away. I also wish the very best for the all the parties injured today in these horrible accidents. I hope they are able to make a speedy recovery.

With respect to the first accident in Parley’s Canyon. It seems as though the severity of the injuries would exhaust the policy limits on a standard, Utah insurance policy. The minimum insurance coverage allowed in Utah is $25,000 per person and $65,000 per accident. Unfortunately, in serious accidents such as this, it often will not cover the high cost of medical bills and recovery therapy. The driver injured in the black Sentra may need to tap into his/her under-insured motorist policy to be able to cover the medical bills associated with this accident. They would do well contacting an experienced Utah personal injury attorney who can assist them with this claim.
