Utah Trucking Accident Closes Interstate 15

posted March 17, 2010 | by

A semi-truck carrying diesel fuel lost control causing a spill of thousands of gallons of fuel onto Interstate 15. This accident happened at around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, causing heavy delays for commuters in Weber County, Utah. The spill required a major cleanup, and for hours traffic had to be diverted off the north and southbound lanes of the freeway. According to the KSL news, the 55-year-old driver of the semi had just picked up a load of diesel fuel from the refinery in Woods Cross, Utah and was on his way to deliver to load in Ogden, Utah when he fell asleep and veered into the barrier. The impact caused the two trailers he was pulling to roll, then slide 150 feet. The oil spill caused a small fire, but the Roy fire department arrived quickly and extinguished the fire.

The crash caused about 5,000 gallons of fuel to spill on several lanes on the Interstate. EnviroCare teams spent nearly seven hours cleaning up the mess. UDOT engineers found that the oil caused severe erosion to a 30-foot section of the interstate which means the road will have to be repaved before it can be driven on.

Authorities say the driver was taken to a local hospital where he was treated for minor injuries. He was in the 11th hour of his 12-hour shift.

Driving drowsy can be just as dangerous as driving drunk. Parties are held liable if they get behind the wheel and cause an accident because they are tired. Driving drowsy reduced your ability to drive effectively and decreases your reaction time. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that there are approximately 100,000 caused by drowsy driving. Sadly, 1,500 people die each year from this type of accident.
